What does the up-and-down effect look like?
Light leaves the top and bottom of the arc, producing two soft triangular pools on the wall that meet around the fixture. It is an indirect effect: you see lit wall rather than the source itself.
Why an arc rather than a straight bar?
The curve does two things: it softens the geometry against rectilinear rooms, and it changes the shape of the light pools, spreading them slightly wider than a straight fixture would.
